The story behind the piece
Nature, set in motion.
En tremblant jewellery gives flowers and other motifs a fine, responsive movement. The circa 1880 floral spray documented by Hancocks brings two flowers and a butterfly together with diamond leaves and small emerald accents.
Sargent’s Lady with the Rose, painted in 1882, belongs to the same late nineteenth-century world. The contrast of black dress and a held flower echoes the brooch’s naturalistic subject and the way it is worn today.
A connection of period and floral theme. The portrait does not show the sitter wearing this brooch.
