The story behind the piece
Jewellery with the lightness of lace.
The Belle Époque garland style translated ribbons, wreaths and botanical ornament into delicate jewellery. In the circa 1900 necklace that inspires this piece, bows and three suspended garlands balance richness with open space.
John Singer Sargent’s 1897 portrait of Mrs. George Swinton captures the sheen of pale satin and the movement of transparent fabric. Its flowing dress and ribbons echo the necklace’s delicate construction.
An association of period, dress and design. There is no known link between the sitter and this particular necklace.
